AM Weekly Update: 2nd May, 2021

Hello and Happy Bank Holiday dear readers! On behalf of everyone at Apocalypse HQ, we hope you are having a restorative break. The musical world has been hustling and bustling recently, so let’s get cracking with this week’s round up ….

This weekend, social media was awash with behind-the-scenes footage of the UK’s first legal rave experiment in Liverpool which happened on Friday. Part of a government-backed trial to restart mass audience events, crowds of eager party goers attended a pilot event aptly named The First Dance for a live music event without masks or social distancing. At one moment during the rave, DJ Hot Since 82 geniusly remixed a segment from one of Boris Johnson’s first ever speeches during the pandemic, fragmenting the line “we need to keep apart” until the bass dropped. Other names on the bill also included Fatboy Slim and German producer Sven Väth! It’s safe to say we were incredibly jealous not to experience it in person, but roll on the 21st June …

The reveal of British Vogue’s June cover featuring industry titan Billie Eilish looking absolutely insane, has also left music fans across the globe feeling gooped and gagged. The fashion story behind the shots, said to have been curated entirely by Billie herself, has been described by Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful as a ‘complete transformation’; a fantasy of play and revelry channeling the classic mid-20s pin up aesthetic.

Billie traded in her iconic green and black hair for platinum blonde back in March, revealed in a selfie which broke the internet, and the star is poised to release her second album later this year. The full interview for British Vogue includes candid discussions of body image in the age of social media, embracing femininity, speaking out against sexual impropriety and rejecting patriarchal standards – and we are LIVING for it. The edition is expected to hit newsstands in the UK on Friday 7th May but the full interview can be read online here: https://www.vogue.co.uk/news/article/billie-eilish-vogue-interview

Notions of power and influence manifest themselves in Billie’s latest single Your Power which the artist herself describes as “an open letter to people who take advantage – mostly men”. You can find this track and a number of new releases on co-founder Hermione’s May 2021 playlist:

Speaking of new music, it’s time for another instalment of AM Weekly New Music Picks! Every track is absolutely brilliant in its own right, but my own personal shout outs must go to Molly Burman’s frustratingly relatable track everytime, an ode to all the singletons out there with disastrous dating lives, and Darla Jade’s latest song Slow Motion, which potently taps into the self punishing yet addictive nature of constantly striving for perfection. Check it out now!
